Okinawa Main Island
Japan's subtropical main island: resort beaches on the west coast, Ryukyu castles and craft villages, and US-influenced towns, all within about 90 minutes' drive of Naha.
- Character
- Mostly domestic Japanese holidaymakers, with growing numbers of Asian visitors and a large US military community in the central towns such as Chatan. Big resort hotels line the Onna coast, Naha is the busy urban hub, and the north (Motobu) is more rural and slower-paced.
- Why it stands out
- Away from Naha's Kokusai-dori and the Churaumi Aquarium crowds, areas like Yomitan (artisan pottery village, castle ruins, small beaches near Cape Zanpa) and Senaga Island's Umikaji Terrace offer a calmer stay. Tsuboya Yachimun Street in Naha is a quieter alternative to Kokusai-dori.
- Getting there
- Fly to Naha Airport (OKA). Nonstop flights take roughly 2.5–3 hours from Tokyo and about 2 hours from Osaka. Senaga Island is about 10 minutes from the airport by car, Chatan is about 15 km north of Naha on Route 58, and the Motobu Peninsula is about 90 minutes' drive. The Yui Rail monorail serves Naha only.
- Seasons
- Busiest in summer school holidays (late July–August) and Golden Week. Quieter and cheaper from November to March, though the sea is too cool for most swimmers then. Subtropical climate: hot and humid summers, mild winters (about 15–20°C), a rainy season around May–June, and typhoons from about June to October.
- Watch-outs
- You realistically need a rental car to go north of Chatan, and traffic on Route 58 and around Naha can be heavy. Typhoons (roughly June–October) can cancel flights and close beaches, and box jellyfish appear in summer, so swim inside netted beaches.
- Neighbourhoods
- Onna Village: A long, narrow west-coast village that is the main resort strip (ANA InterContinental Manza, Hotel Nikko Alivila, Moon Beach and others). Cape Manzamo and Cape Maeda are here. / Motobu: Northern peninsula about 90 minutes from Naha: Churaumi Aquarium, Bise, Sesoko Island (reached by bridge) and Minna Island (about 15 minutes by boat). Rural and slower-paced. / Chatan: About 15 km north of Naha. American Village shopping, Sunset Beach and seaside cafés, with a strong US military-community influence. / Yomitan: Craft-focused village with pottery workshops, weaving, Zakimi Castle, Cape Zanpa's cliffs and lighthouse, and Zanpa and Nirai beaches. / Senaga Island / Tomigusuku: Small island linked by road next to the airport, with Umikaji Terrace and an onsen hotel. Good for planespotting and sunsets; swimming is prohibited at Senaga Beach. / Naha: Capital and transport hub: Kokusai-dori, Makishi Market, Tsuboya pottery street and Shuri Castle. The rebuilt main hall of Shuri Castle is scheduled to reopen on 23 November 2026.
